Water: More Precious Than Gold

Our goal is to educate Gold Canyon residents about water conservation and demand management. Partnership between Arizona Water Company and the community of Gold Canyon.

#QuickTip Heavy rain means that you can skip watering your lawn for up to three days. But set a reminder so you don’t forget to turn your systems back on and get back to a regular watering schedule. If you have a Smart Irrigation timer, the system has a rain delay that does this for you when activated!

#WaterTips Any standing water also has the potential to become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, so make sure to put collected water to non-potable use as quickly as possible*:

1. Secure a tarp – either from trees in your landscape or stable posts/poles – so that the center of the tarp sags lower than the four corners. Cut a hole in the lowest point of the tarp and place a container beneath it to collect the water.

2. Create a V-shaped structure by bending a flat piece of metal or attaching two flat pieces of metal or wood together, making sure any seams are completely sealed to avoid leakage. Orient the structure so that one end sits at a higher point than the other, directing the flow of water down the seam to the lowest point. Place a collection container at the lowest point.

3. Observe the drip patterns from the edges of your roof, sheds/outdoor storage, and fencing next time it rains. Place containers on the ground underneath the areas where the most rain flows. Consider installing diverters with drainage pipes to direct the flow.

*REQUIREMENTS TO ENSURE SAFETY: Water that will be stored for longer than 36 hours should be protected with mosquito-proof screens.
